Size: 7in disk, 12in from face to tail. Matrix is 24in x 12in.

Stingrays are among the rarest and most sought after of all fossils coming out of the Green River Formation. This particular species had a whip tail armed with 3 venomous spines, 90 pectoral-fin rays meeting in the posterior are of the skull, and 16 pelvic rays extending to the base of the tail. The two claspers near the anal region indicate that this one was a male, the claspers being utilized during copulation. The tail itself was extremely flexible, composed of nearly 200 fully calcified vertebrate regulated by muscles with a hair-trigger reflex that was activated by contact with a potential predator.

Here, we have a fish that flourished during the Jurassic era, over 65 million year ago. Unfornutately, during excavation this piece was severed at the anal fin, otherwise it would have been a thousand dollar specimen.
